The NBA is a league where championships are all that really matters. The majority of the all-time greats have multiple titles to their name, while James is still 0 for 3.
Karl Malone was an exceptional player too, but not winning that one title really holds him back (probably not one of the ten best of all time).
Once again I am not saying James isn't a great player, even if he never wins a title he should still in the top 10-20 players of all time, just not in the discussion for the best ever.

The majority of all-time greats also played with better teams than James has so far and it is still early to say that he hasn't won enough.
I would say (and this year is obviously early) but in 2 of 3 he has played very well and even in the Dallas loss last year he wasn't bad not great but very good at the worst.
I do agree that he needs to win to be top 10 (although depending on what happens maybe still could be top 10).
