+ Have an external drive so storage is not an issue (atleast I don't think so)

+ I have 8gb ram from my old MBP which would fit in the 2011 MBP
I am also open to getting a windows laptop. Any advice would be appreciated!

I went from a 15" 2010 mbp -> 2011mba and love the switch. I do programming / photoshop and it handles them all well for my needs (granted not doing anything too intensive). I'm not a gamer, so I can't help you out there, but I also run a windows 7 vm via parallels and it handles that no problem, its nice to just be able to swipe inbetween two OS's.
I'll probably upgrade the sdd to 240gb here in the near future, doubles the speed etc of the factory one, so that should provide a good performance boost too.
