I have experience with both the broken jaw and collapsing on the parade square. Both suck.
I was fortunate to not have to deal with having my jaw wired shut but have a steel plate and four screws in it. I still could not eat for quite some time, or was not supposed to rather. I had to finally tough it out and start chewing after losing 20 pounds in 5 days.
The doctors were giving me "ensure" which tastes like crap and is really no substitute for food...but it should help deal with hunger issues as it does fill you up.
I hope for his sake they lined his jaw/teeth up properly...they didn't with mine and I am now dealing with that 15 years later.
