Whoa! Stop the railroad

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepu...-railroad.html

Glendale leaders have been working for a year with a potential buyer to keep the Phoenix Coyotes in the city. Months and months were spent fine-tuning this deal to the potential buyer's and National Hockey League's specifications.

Those putting up the money for the deal -- Glendale's taxpayers -- should have the same time. Instead, the city gave them mere days. It released the draft document on Monday, scheduled a public workshop for midmorning today and slated a vote on the issue for 10:15 a.m. Friday.

Whoa! Why the rush?

Residents deserve the opportunity to fully review this complicated arrangement and offer thoughtful, well-grounded feedback. They own the arena and should have a say in how their money is spent.

City leaders need to take the time to fully explain the benefits -- and risks -- to residents. That cannot be done in a hastily called public workshop at 10 a.m. on a Thursday, when most people are at work. Especially when the only opportunity for residents to voice concerns or support for the plan comes a mere 24 hours later, again when most people are at work.
