I agree that rings are a waste of money strictly speaking. However, so are cars, so anyone with a 50K truck should not be giving lectures on responsible spending. Also houses can be a waste of money too, they aren't garunteed to make money either.

The difference is that everyone
needs a home to live in (you don't have to
buy real estate, of course, but many people do). Buying a property may or may not be a good long-term investment from a strictly financial point-of-view, but having a roof over your head serves an essential purpose in life. Likewise, having a vehicle is often necessary for employment/livelihood purposes for many people.
A diamond ring is nothing more than a frivalous luxury that serves absolutely no purpose other than being shiny.
