While I don't have the insight into either case (as none of us really do) in order to make a determination of either persons character, I do tend to have a greater amount of empathy for someone who does have a diagnosable disease and at least has the ability to be treated and empathize with others.
That's a bit of a stretch. Throw in help with, lessen, reduce, or aleviate some or all. But hardly "cure".
