I'd be happy with a real life high light intro, rather than lame CGI. Similar to this;
Mind you...I'd like a lot more things before that.
As for EA in general though, I think the problem lies within the higher management. The developers themselves do quite a bit, in a short time frame. Between thinking of a new feature, then coding and implementing it. It's a lot of work in a short time. Management is the driving force pushing them to create a new game every year. And why not? They make money, so it makes sense for them.
I would be absolutely fine waiting 2 or 3 years for a completely refined NHL game. But who knows, maybe over the last couple years they have been doing that while simultaneously pumping out these CoD-esque designs in order to finance a big overhaul.
The skating does look really awesome, I admit. I can't justify paying full price for it though. NHL 12 was too much if a disappointment, so I think I'm going to wait until at least 14 before getting another one. Plus my roommate will probably buy it.
