Default Contacts and Calendars: To the cloud or local?

For the last 1.5 years since getting an iPhone I've synched it using Outlook for the calendar and contacts. I've really liked that system in last night a mysterious glitch in outlook made it unresponsive and the only way to fix it was a format and complete system restore. So that was a complete pain in the ass.

I like the idea of using gmail to have all my contacts and calendars, its seems logical. A couple things that made me nervous tho ..
1. relying on google (or any one service for that matter) for everything
2. security of having my friends and family contact information and my calendar on the internet.

Does anyone else totally use cloud based contacts/calendars? How have you liked it? Are my concerns valid or overblown rubbish?
