The only way we can compare them is cinematography, acting and writing. For Chronicle, so much of it was just so contrived. Who sits around with their group of friends and says "This is the best day of my life"? That whole scene made me LOL as they were clearly pointing out the height of their friendship before the fall. And seriously, the placement of cameras was so lazy. "I'm filming for my blog, while some dude is standing in front of my door expressing his feelings." And by the end it seemed like they just gave up on the whole "filming from amateur camera" thing for the final fight. Understandable that Chronicle had a fraction of the budget, but that doesn't excuse some of these things from irking me.
With Avengers, it always knew what kind of movie it was. A campy, fun, action packed movie about a team of super heroes. And it executed that soooo damn well. Chronicle was good, but overly melodramatic, with average acting, and often contrived.

LOL, that one scene where Matt goes and talks to the girl at her house and he is on his cell phone with her filming it was so pointless. That scene made no sense to the context to the movie; their entire sub-plot was contrived and had nothing to do with anything, it's like they just knew they needed a love interest so they put this in. Was awkward to watch and boring.
