I had only made the comments I made because I had been a stepfather and saw what had happened to the kid first hand. There is a very real difference between parenting and overparenting. It wasn't pretty, and the term helicopter parent exists for a reason. Anyone who is to become a functioning adult needs to learn independence and it's not something you can automatically teach a kid during their 17th year. It takes small steps for their whole childhood, heck we even take steps in our adult life.
Now and actual age might be hard to pin down, maybe 1 works for some families and maybe 3 works for others. But you can definitely go too long and you can definitely make it tougher on your child (and their adult life) by trying to be too nice or too protective (in all sorts of things, not just this breastfeeding example).
