The first computer I bought, a Dell 486, came with a ball mouse. After a while the mouse had problems tracking, so I took the ball out to take a look.

Inside on the rollers I noticed the "grippy strips" (my word for the 1/8" bands installed on the rollers to provide friction to the ball) were breaking down. I could actually see chunks of the factory strips were missing!

I went to great lengths to repair these strips by cutting electricians tape into 1/8" strips and replacing the factory strips on the rollers.

Worked great, even after I realized what a dumbass I was.
