I'd experience applause at two movies:
The first was Transformers when Optimus made his first appearance.
The second time was at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington, when they did a showing of Turkish Star Wars. Hand to God, the theatre broke out in massive applause about 10 times time during that showing. No exaggeration. That movie was quite simply amazing.
