I don't, at least not entirely. If you are going to appeal to the public for justice, funds, etc. then the public deserves to know facts of the case. They don't need every sorid detail, but to say they don't owe any explanations isn't really true.
I actually don't remember there being much in the way of requesting public support in this incident, they seem to have tried to deal with it on their own. The media kind of ran away with this story iirc.
