If I were to invade the privacy of one my employees they'd probably sue me and I'd get fired, not sent into a small room with bad coffee and stale pastries to be humoured for an hour or two.

In all fairness, the police officer in question wasn't exactly a "great police officer." In my opinion, he shouldn't be allowed to remain with the CPS even if he doesn't serve any time for the private information for cash scheme. This is the same officer who left his gun in his car while at the folk festival and it was stolen.
