Please re-read my post, I said mainstay, not mainstream. Mainstray meaning they have been around for a long time and would always be considered among the top directors (such as Scott, Eastwood, Allen, Mann, etc).
And I am not a Nolan fanboy, I don't really like the ending in The Prestige either, but I loved how Bale's character was able to pull it off the final act. The script was mostly written by Christopher's brother Johnathan, who could be blamed for some of the faults in that movie.
I also never said it was "amazing", it was a solid 4 out of 5 star movie marred by Johansson's sub-par acting, and the somewhat convoluted ending as you said. However, that would likely be his "worst" movie which is still better than some of the movies the other directors have worked on.
