The good thing about his ult is that if you know they are going to escape it, you can cancel it at the last minute for a % of damage.
There are times I've used it effectively with the intention of it doing 2/3rds damage, just start moving and it scales according to how long you've been channeling.
But yeah, certain team comps can just shut your ult down - you just have to resist temptation and keep holding until the enemy has silence / stun cooldowns... if you make it that far.
Sona, Veigar - now those are fun ones to team with. You can catch 2-3 in the ult.
