If it hasn't been painted, I'd stain it. Natural wood looks so much better, and you're not going to have paint flaking off and looking ghetto.

Unless you have some huge property, it really shouldn't take more than a weekend (if not one day). I don't think you can stain with spray/roller though, so I think you have to do it by brush.
