If I had time I would link to a story that is quite dramatic and nearly unbelievable story about a lake in Cameroon I believe that had a thermal inversion that flipped, belching a huge toxic cloud of CO2 that swept down the valley and killed every living thing, including a village in that valley. An amazing story that I haven't been able to forget. So these things do happen, but the circumstances needed are very specific.
