Religions are not tolerated in China because they usurp the supremacy of the communist state. The state allows some permitted moderate religions, but only so that they can maintain control and monitor them. I know, just pointing it out for those who are advocating the separation of church and state to resolve issues like this that sometimes it works backwards.
