With the final being 3-1 woudn't he still get the save for finishing the game with a 2 run lead? IIRC if you come into a game with a 3 or fewer run lead and you close it out it's a save.
The only time it strays are if the pitcher came into a game with the tying run in the on deck circle and records the final out of the game. So if there are two outs and the bases are loaded in a 8-3 game the pitcher would get the save.
Also the old time save of relief pitcher comes into the game with the lead and throws the final 3 innings.
