The short version is avoid simple carbs, fried foods, etc. Go for complex carbohydrates, multigrain bread/pasta, brown rice, non-starchy fruit, eat meats like beef or fish, etc. The reason you go for complex carbs and whole grains (even something simple like Barley) is that they keep you full longer because they take longer to digest and slowly release energy over the day so you don't crash.
