He is not that out to lunch as you make him out to be. The best camera is the one you have with you. The iPhone 4s actually takes pictures that are competitive to a good digital point and shoot.

The convenience of being able to take good (not excellent) pictures and video, and uploading them in minutes to a social site outweigh the advantages of carrying a second device. Zoom is really the only thing I miss.
