I thought part of the battery issues with some apps revolved around the ads, or at least I remember reading that somewhere.
I wish they'd add a timer to the background app services, if I wanted to make an app that woke up once an hour and did something (got your location, checked for a message, whatever) I can't really do that.

Pretty sure pretending to be a VOIP app is pretty much a guaranteed rejection from the store now - and this wouldn't account for the "lot's of apps" accessing the internet in the background that people are alluding to.
For timers, can't apps schedule local notifications (on-device push notifications that don't go OTA) to have themselves prodded to life on a fixed schedule?
