I just read a suggested ending on another forum and love it. It also satisfies BioWare's desire to leave things ambiguous at the end. Spoilers, obviously.

That would avoid all the problems I have with the ending and also cause crazy amounts of fan speculation about what really happened.

Everything stays the same up until the end of the encounter with Anderson and the Illusive Man on the Citadel. Shepard, slowly bleeding to death, crawls towards the control panel and, with his/her last bit of strength, pushes the activation button. Fade to black, show credits. That would avoid all the problems I have with the ending and also cause crazy amounts of fan speculation about what really happened.
