A nice party takes a fair amount of time and planning. You could rent a room at a hotel, and send out invitations to family and friends. Because it's summer in Calgary, you could go with a western theme, and have them dress western. You could serve a punch, spiked or otherwise, depending on the guests.
You may want to put together a video which depicts certain important events in his life, with the music of the era in the background. I have found that something like this can be most meaningful. Also, speeches and toasts from some of his closest friends may add a lot, provided he isn't roasted too badly.
I'd discourage presents, however, you may wish to send him on a trip to somewhere he's always wanted to go, and the guests can contribute to it if they like.
I have found that the success of such a party is directly proportional to the amount of time and effort you put into making it happen. As long as people know what they are supposed to do, everything usually falls into place.
Hope this helps.
