I'm proud to be approaching this wonderful age myself in less than two years so I'm thinking what I'd like from my kids. One is for them to host a summer barbecue for a number of my friends entirely put on by my kids. They did something similar to this for our 25th anniversary and it was spectacular.

Maybe a weekend in Jasper or Banff with my wife. Or, depending on what you can afford, three days in Vegas.

When my wife turned 40 I produced a congratulatory videotape with greetings and good wishes from friends and family members that I presented to her. I went out of my way to get people to dream up something unique, so there were songs written and performed, poems, short skits and many unusual locations and situations used in the production. It was immensely successful. If you did it right and gave this to your dad, I think it would be something he'd treasure for the rest of his life. If you do this, I'd have some advice for you.

Depending on your dad's work situaition, you might tie this into the fact that he'll now be eligible for CPP benefits.

If his kids are spread out you might consider just getting everything together. I know I'd love that.
