But you are operating under the assumption that all games use both joysticks simultaneously. Lots of games use left joystick and right buttons, in which case the PS3 controller is the one not symmetrical.
Also, I find that your entire premise of neutral position of thumbs is bunk. I hate the PS3 controller because the joystick is way too low on the controller. My neutral thumb position fits the left joystick on the xbox controller much better.
I also much prefer the xbox trigger as opposed to the dual shoulder buttons on the PS3 controller.
As for the OP, also consider if your kid will be playing online. I'm sure lotsa people have both but you may want to buy the console that his friends use. Personally, I don't know anyone that games primarily on a PS3 so for online purposes it is xbox and only xbox.
