If the opportunity is there and Baertschi does not play another game in the NHL regular season or the playoffs, this will have virtually no impact on his development, nor his potential to be a really good NHL player down the road. It just does not make any sense to burn a year off of an extremely valuable ELC for a player to participate in a handful of games. Baertschi is not going to tip the balance for today's Flames to suddenly become Stanley Cup contenders. He may be able to do that in three years, and if he is still making the rookie maximum at that time, just imagine how many added options this provides for the Flames.
