Often people get caught up in the bidding, and you lose that with the 2nd chance offer. I throw this out there because I had buyers who backed out say "just offer it to the 2nd highest bidder"- thinking that I would only be out the $5 between the 2 bids. Nope- it would often mean re-listing; which also shows other buyers that somebody either backed out, or that you have multiples of this item so there is less urgency.

Yup our work ebay account has had given at least as many second chance offers and we have yet to see someone purchase it as a 2nd chance buyer.
Seems odd he'd bid up to $5000 on the wrong item. As a seller, it annoys the crap out of me when people back out of the auctions. Most times they don't even reply to your messages so that infuriates me even more. The offering of paying listing fee's would be a kind gesture and would likely make me happier.
FWIW, people just generally ignore you, or the odd time they do talk to you, its a short message about them losing their job or some other lame BS excuse.
