I've actually read quite a bit of the studies on it. Most of them point to the fact that even if you are a heavy smoker as long as quit before aged 35 you only have a marginaly higher chacne of getting lung cancer.
From a common sense point of view, if you think that the occasional wiff of second hand smoke is going to give you lung cancer you'd better stay away from any kind of an open flame or combustion...which is pretty much everywhere.
