I would play both ME1 and 2 before even thinking of 3. ME1 for the story and RPG elements; ME2 for the better combat (Vangaurd is so much more fun in 2...) and characters. The side missions are more fleshed out in ME2 it's true, but there's still a few interesting ones in ME1 (Hades' Dogs, whatever Paragon/Renegade-specific sidequest you unlocked, or both)... even if the area was laid out like one of two possible dungeons. Oh well. And they're all pretty short, except Bring Down The Sky.

fighting a Colossus in the Mako is not effective.

Definitely not. I shotgunned those suckers to death. I liked the Mako otherwise. You could scale mountains in that thing! ....Mako + planet missions did get boring after a while.
Still, Hammerhead was just not the same.
I for one love ME2 biotics. Or rather, I just love that Vanguard was no longer just a soldier with biotics. Charge and Shockwave >> whatever the ME1 Vanguard had, seriously. And ME3 made the class even more fun, but I'm also a fan of close-range combat
anyway. (hello, heavy melee and Nova)
And the ME1 Spectre weapons served me well. With whatever the hell mods I used the shotgun tore through Geth like they were butter.
