Yes, it is very similar to Vandal Hearts. But with a better background story. One difference is that with Vandal Hearts, you couldn't make EVERYONE a single class, such as a Knight. In FFT anyone can be anything pretty much. You can make the Hero a black mage, a Knight, a Calculator, a Summoner.... whatever you want.
I did buy it this morning and played it for a bit. The battles seemed kinda intuitive. I had a bit of trouble rotating the grid. I would have thought that two fingers swinging around would make the grid spin, but no such luck. But you can use the multitouch to zoom in and zoom out on the grid.
