Brittany Lundy, one of the protesters, said the new cost estimates were irrelevant unless the city plans to pursue compensation.

“This is all bogus and it has been since the beginning, so nothing has changed,” she said.

Meanwhile, Scott Hennig, the Alberta director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said he believes council should pursue the protesters as a deterrent to other potential bylaw-breakers.

“They probably won’t get a cent back,” he said. “But it still may be worth going after them to send the message to anyone else going after the law.”
