I am confused here.
Is this a condo building you are living in? And they charged your unit?
Also, were you being a jackass in the elevator, and triggered a safety device? Because if you were, I can't see why you shouldn't have to pay the bill. Certainly the board/other residents shouldn't have to.
I had a similar issue in my building where I removed a common area fire door to carry a recliner up. The I leaned the door awkwardly against a railing, it plummeted down the stairwell, and damaged the wall, and door. I got a $600 bill I just had to suck up. It's not the other residents fault.
