Every year I see the lineups of people paying $30-$60 (above the price of admission) for brief "interactions" with the stars and I give my head a bit of a shake. But as you said, there is a demand for it, so however people spend their time & money is up to them.
But I do enjoy the panels, it's nice to see the stars relaxed and get some off the cuff remarks. Hearing Jonathan Frakes refer to "Deep Throat Nine" was funny as hell. At the very least it's an entertaining experience.
