The arena might be dark, but I'm sure what you're aiming at will be lit up.

First of all, shoot RAW files (assuming you have software to edit them afterwards).
If your camera has Auto-ISO, I would set it up so it will go no higher than 1600 - 2000.

Then you can shoot in Manual Mode. I'd start with f5.6 - f/8 and see if that works with any shutter speed above 1/125 sec. Set the ISO to 100 and then it will bounce around between 100 and 1600/2000 to give a correct exposure.

If it doesn't have Auto-ISO, then I'd just set it at 1600 (assuming that will still produce usable images on your camera) and use Shutter Priority Mode (Tv on a Canon). Play around with 1/125 or 1/250 of a second and see what gives the best effect.
Depending on how it's all turning out, just use Exposure Compensation to adjust the exposure up or down by 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop so you can just forget about it.
With my D7000, if I am using Aperture or Shutter priority modes, I usually have the Exposure Compensation set to -2/3 since the D7000 tends to overexpose everything if I leave it neutral.

What lens are you using? If you're using a telephoto, or anything with 200mm or more of reach, you'll want to bump your shutter speed up to 1/320 sec or faster if you want to cancel out any chance of blur.
