I just finished watching "Save the Last One". The first time I saw this episode I thought that what Shane did to Otis was despicable, and I still do. However, what does one do in his shoes? He was making a decision in accordance with some sort of social darwinian ethic, and selfishly chose self-preservation and the best interests of his community. I suppose the more noble thing would be self-sacrifice, but who could realistically choose death-by-zombie? Especially given that Shane also likely harboured doubts about Otis's physical abilities to complete the task.
