I really don't think that there is a story to tell for 7,8,9. If you look at Lucas' treatment of 1-9 9 was actually the end of ROTJ.
The story to an extent was about Luke Skywalker and while he was still alive, the actual story was all about Anakin Skywalker and the rise of fall of the Empire.
At the end of the 6 movies, the Sith were destroyed, Palpatine and Vader were dead, the Empire was all but beaten with no leadership, The Jedi were rising and the force was in effect balanced.
I don't think that there was and Lucas right right when he said, there was really nothing to tell.
Even the EU with the Thrawn Trilogy which was ok and thought of as a sequel idea never managed to capture the same kind of story line as the movies.
