The drive wasn't overly bad, but it was enough to get tiring, and when it gets bad it can get BAD.
32km to downtown according to Google.
Chestermere is 19km from downtown, and there are multiple routes, so it's definitely better from that point of view.
Less stores in Chestermere, but easy ring road access makes most of the city easy to get to.
I like Chestermere more than Airdrie, but it's less of a town and more of a collection of houses and banks.

I moved from Strathmore to Chestermere in around 2005. I liked my house and the neighbours there, but I absolutely hated Chestermere itself. I moved there only because I moved my office out of my house and into some office space downtown.
Anyway, after a few years of commuting down town everyday, I just got fed up with it, and moved my office back home. Since then, we sold our house in Chestermere and moved back to Strathmore. I'm much happier now. Then again, I don't have to go into Calgary very often. If you are working in Calgary, the drive from Strathmore everyday would be a bit much.
It may not be for everyone, but I definitely prefer small town living to the Big City. Of course, when I was younger, I had a much different view.
