I think the big thing is that they hop on Deerfoot\QE2 and head to Memorial (if they work downtown). There are no lights until you get to the core. Traffic usually flows well in the morning along this route.
Where as in the city people travel on roads like McLeod and such that are full of lights and slow you down a lot.
These are just my thoughts as I have not traveled this route for rush hour.
I do know going home can be a PITA as Deerfoot backs up a lot until you get past 64th or Beddington.
