sounds like grandstanding on a message board.
Grandstanding? No, I don't think so. I understand his point completely.

I had a long distance relationship with my future wife (I was in the UK, she in Canada) in the late 80's. We wrote each other every day the old fashioned way as there was no internet or instant messaging and the phone calls cost $1.50 a minute. There was actually something a little special about receiving letters in the mail from each other all of the time. We actually got to know each other this way as we had only spent a total of about 50 days together when we got married. We've been married over 20 years now. Funnily enough my wife and I may actually be one of the last couples that communicated extensively this way. That to me is a little sad.

Sappy? Maybe, but I really don't care. I really doubt that it would have felt the same if we had been able to text each other every day. It's just not the same.

I'm completely on the iphone/ipad/laptop bandwagon now. I text and email for work every day and it's very convenient but the Captain is right, there is something very sad about the lost art of letter writing.
