He was the rare actor that really didn't need or use Star Trek to rebuild his career or get other roles.
He's a guy that was perfectly content with theatre and teaching and playing around with Jazz.
I remember in the first year of DS9 people hated him, but once he got rolling he became to me a better Captain then all but Shatner.
the episodes that he headlined in were just incredible standouts.
Pale Moonlight was so well acted by him.
I loved the baseball game episode as well, and the episode where he died and kept popping in and out of Jakes life was amazing, especially when he did the speech where he told his son to move on.
Oh and I forgot the episodes where he was the science fiction writer who went insane were incredible.
I had high hopes for Bakula but he was just so bland, and I hated Janeway enough that I hoped that they would murder her in her sleep.
