I don't disagree, but that is the way the world works outside the westernised world.
I am pretty sure if the lady who was attacked is ready to finger her attacker, this guy will be behind bars, and the news cycle will have moved on. They probably even can convict this guy without her testimony. Pretty messed up stuff, but again, most of the world does this all the time.
To target a different country, I was hospitalized in the Dominican a few years ago. They sequestered my wife, and refused to take the IV out of my arm, and discharge me until I paid them $2000 in cash. This was at an "international" hospital to boot. Even though we gave them insurance papers, they wanted cash only, or they would call the police.
So for me, I am less worried about being attacked in Mexico, as my son getting injured or drowning in one of their sub-standard safety regulated pools. Happens more frequently than some would think. That extortion nightmare is fine for me, but not my family. Forget it.
So really you have only a few choices, USA, Australia, Western Europe. So for now, I think I will be going to Hawaii, Phoenix, etc. Ya, its a bit more expensive, but we can afford it. I just like the all round piece of mind at this stage of my life.
That, and the wife and I are foodies. The US has some awesome places to eat, and I won't have to live off Mexican Pizza and Hot Dogs for a week.
