As someone who has visted Mexico twice in the past five years I have to say that in my personal experince Mexico is one of the only places I have had a severe incident in. My wife was drugged while at a club in Puerto Vallarta. I have since personally met 4 other girls who have been also drugged in bars in Mexico. Seems a high rate to me. /shrug

I have travelled to over 30 countries in the last 7 years and have had very few problems elsewhere (including the middle east, India, and South East Asia). We are seasoned backpackers who try to take pretty good care of ourselves.

The thing that really irrated us was that when we went to the hospital we were treated as though the drugging was self inflicted or my wife was just drunk. For the record she is a light drinker who had only two drinks that night and then was passing out in our booth at 11:30. I immediately took her to hospital when I realized she was obviously drugged. The $3500 hospital bill for an overnight stay was a really kicker. She also had a tough time collecting from insurance due to the fact the doctor was to lazy to do a drug screen and wrote down she had alcohol poisoning.

The whole situation really left us with a poor opionion of Mexico and I highly doubt we will ever be back. I personally believe things are going to get a whole lot worse there before they get better. However I hope I am wrong because we did meet a lot of great locals while we were there.
