You're right though, there is more stuff to do on the Cancun side... you can even go to Wal-Mart! And while Chitzen Itza is nice, it has been restored so much that it is practically new and access is limited (can you even climb it anymore?) There are still plenty of pre-colonial ruins on the west side that are more authentic, and IMO, the Spanish colonial towns are a lot more impressive on the west side.
