My point is that there is plenty more to the Caribbean side of Mexico than the nightlife, and really the nightlife isn't all that crazy outside of Cancun AFAIK.
I guess my idea of a vacation isn't about how many things I can do in a short time... and I hate "in the way" people. I prefer to immerse myself into the culture. The whole Mayan Riviera area reminds me so much of being in any large North American city. It's like being in L.A. or some other metropolis.

You're right though, there is more stuff to do on the Cancun side... you can even go to Wal-Mart! And while Chitzen Itza is nice, it has been restored so much that it is practically new and access is limited (can you even climb it anymore?) There are still plenty of pre-colonial ruins on the west side that are more authentic, and IMO, the Spanish colonial towns are a lot more impressive on the west side.
