I'm not sure I'd agree with that. In terms of Top end, instant classics, yes sure. None of the movies that were nominated for Best Picture will be talked about in 20 years. I think that's fair, but that doesn't mean this was a bad year for movies.
I thought there was plenty of quality in the artsy dramas(Descendants, Drive, Tree of Life) to some mainstream dramas/thrillers(Girl with Dragon Tat/Moneyball, The Help, The Ides of March) to even some of the summer blockbusters. There was quality in them like X Men and Planet of the Apes. Combine that with comedies like Bridesmaids and The Artist and the year as a whole isn't that bad.
Again, no classics, but still plenty of quality films.
