Sort of.
I think she got he donations (in order of importance) because:
1. She's an athlete and is famous (an amateur/Olympic athlete no less)
2. It was a tragic story (husband, Olympic hopeful, nice girl)
3. She was a pioneer and one of the best in her sport
4. She's beautiful
In the long run her looks probably led to 1) happening and her appearing in Maxim etc and 1) in turn led to the donations. So it isn't like she got the donations because she's hot, at least not directly.
Being famous is the most important part here. If this is Joe Blow the IT guy from Red Deer who was on vacation and this happened it may have not even made the news, let alone a huge campaign. Everything else just led to it being a big a deal as it was, but that's the reason anyone paid attention in the first place.
