Text Message Spam/Scam?
Hi guys, thought I'd consult the CP braintrust regarding a strange text situation.
Yesterday I received a strange text message from a BC number I don't recognize. I used to live in Vancouver so I thought maybe its someone I know or used to know. I responded to it. Here's how the conversation went:
texter: Did you know cats have 30 vertebrae?
me: no I had no idea
texter: Thank you for subscribing to Cats Facts Daily. To unsubcribe press 7.
me: 7
texter: Action not recognized.
I left it at that until today, and they text me again.
texter: Did you know that a group of adult cats is called a clowder?
me: who is this?
texter: your contract with Cats Facts Daily end on 01/15/2013.
me: I have no contract. Stop sending me these messages.
texter: action not recognized.
So this morning I call TELUS, and they explain to me that premium text message subscriptions come from 5 digit numbers. Since this is a regular 10 digit BC phone number, I shouldn't have any premium charges. Won't be able to verify for sure until my next billing cycle.
I also called the number 5-6 times. Never get an answer, usually rings and rings until a dial tone comes up again, or I get a recording saying "customer is unavailable". No voicemail or anything.
Have any of you ever experienced or heard of this? Should I actually be concerned about getting crazy charges on my cell phone bill?
