Default Fireplace Question

I'm looking to the great knowledge base otherwise known as CP,

I own a house built in 1979 and it has a brick woodburning fireplace with a cleanout door. It is very noticeable when the temperature drops outside that the cold air rushes inside and makes the inside of my house very cold. I've tried stuffing the 'hole' with that pink batt insulation, but it still seems that the cold air still is able to get in.

What am I doing wrong and is there a better way of keeping the cold air out besides removing the woodburning fireplace and installing a natural gas insert?

Thanks in advance.
